First day of swimming lessons
Well done to all the children who took part in their first swimming lessons today! We are very proud of the children who overcame nerves to get into the pool - the feedback from children and staff was really positive!
A few children did not have their swimming kit with them today - we ask that parents please ensure they send the correct kit in tomorrow.
We are happy to make accomodations for children who may experience barriers -
Modesty / embarrasement - children may wear a tshirt to cover their costume / with their shorts if needed. Alternatively, long sleeved costumes with shorts are an option.
Toileting concerns - Splash Swim School recommend neoprene swim shorts / pants are worn underneath the child's costume. They would not be visible underneath and will give the child confidence while in the water. We can also make accomodations with the changing arrangements in these circumstances.
Anxiety - support will be offered to build childrens' confidence gradually and encourage them to take small steps. Where a child is anxious about the water, not swimming is not an appropriate response. It is essential that we help them to overcome these fears to ensure they are safe in the future when in/near water.
Medical issue / condition - a doctors note / medical evidence will need to be provided.
Swimming is a compulsory part of the primary curriculum ~ parents do NOT have the right to withdraw and children cannot opt out of swimming. Where parents do not provide the correct kit for children to swim, this will unfortuantely be classed as an unauthorised absence which could lead to a referral to the Local Authority and subsequent fine.
Of course, as a school, we do not wish to take such measures and would much rather work with all our parents to ensure their children can swim comfortably and confidently.
Best wishes,
Mrs Ferretti
